The US Open draw was released Thursday, and there are a plethora of juicy first round match-ups on the women’s side.
Those include World No.1 Serena Williams against WTA Rising Star Taylor Townsend, five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova against former Top 10 player Maria Kirilenko and reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova against dangerous Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic.
It will be Williams’ maiden encounter with fellow American Townsend, who showed her impressive potential with a run to the third round of her first Grand Slam earlier this year at the French Open. A potential quarterfinal opponent for Williams is another WTA Rising Star, Eugenie Bouchard.
Sharapova, who is in first place on the Road To Singapore leaderboard, leads her head-to-head with fellow Russian Kirilenko, 5-2, but lost in their only previous match-up at a Grand Slam at the 2010 Australian Open. Kvitova and Mladenovic have split their two meetings.
A couple of other compelling first round clashes include former World No.1 Jelena Jankovic against fellow Serb Bojana Jovanovski and seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams against Kimiko Date-Krumm.
